Bible: New Revised Standard Version Gospel Parallels
by Burton H. Throckmorton

Reviewed by H. Szesnat
This is a classic synopsis, using the English (NRSV) text of the first three canonical gospels. The layout is great, the print clear and legible. Excellent for close reading of the gospel texts in the usual parallel columns (Mt, Mk, Lk). Where doublets or similar phenomena occur, both texts from the same gospel are listed side by side (for example, Mt 5:31-32 has Mt 19:9, Mk 10:11-12 and Lk 16:18 in parallel columns). Of course, the good print size means that the fourth gospel had to be left out. Mostly that is not a problem, but of course in some instances it is useful to have it. Still, at least the references to Jn are offered, so one can go look it up. Also helpful are smaller texts printed at the bottom of the page, offering useful extra-canonical material where appropriate (Gospel of Thomas, Didache, etc.). On the whole: a must-have for the serious study of the gospels, certainly for anyone who does academic theology. Of course, if you are REALLY serious, you would need to read a Greek synopsis, but that is another story...
